What is brainrot?

Brainrot is internet slang for content so repetitive and low-effort that watching it feels like your attention span is dissolving — and for the absurd meme characters that trend produced.

The meaning

Used as a noun, brainrot is the content itself: endless short clips, recycled sounds, nonsense captions. Used about a person (“I have brainrot”), it describes the feeling of being saturated by that content — thinking in memes, quoting sounds nobody outside the feed understands.

It is mostly self-deprecating. People call their own taste brainrot as a joke, not as a medical claim.

Brainrot characters

The most visible part of the trend is its cast of invented creatures: an animal mashed with an everyday object, given a sing-song nonsense name, a dramatic origin story and stats fans argue about. The Italian-sounding variant became the biggest branch of the trend.

Common brainrot slang

  • Aura — points you gain or lose for how cool or embarrassing an action was.
  • Delulu — delusional, in a knowingly optimistic way.
  • NPC — behaving on autopilot, like a background game character.
  • Main character energy — acting like the story revolves around you.
  • Rizz — charisma, especially flirting ability.

Is brainrot bad for you?

The word is a joke, but the underlying habit — hours of uninterrupted short-form scrolling — is a real attention drain for many people. Treat it the way the meme does: laugh at it, then close the app.
